My Commitment to the 5th District
We must fully fund and prioritize the basic services of city government and be financially cautious as we address the needs of Lexington, live within our means, protect our rainy-day and snowy-day funds, make smart investments that keep Lexington progressive and prosperous — without placing additional burdens on you.
I am running to restore common-sense leadership and integrity to our City Council and return our focus to the basic services local government is meant to provide its taxpayers. Lexington’s 5th District deserves leadership that listens, shows up and gets results.
I am a lifelong resident of Lexington, and I have lived in the Fifth District for more than forty years. I promise to find and bring pragmatic, local solutions shaped by the people who live here and have the support of the people in the Fifth District to the Council.
City Hall has fumbled issues we all deal with every day — traffic law enforcement, traffic management, road conditions, winter storm preparedness and response, taking away vacuum leaf collection which prevents storm sewer back-ups that cause flooding, even sidewalk placement. Too often recently, the voices of Fifth District neighbors haven’t been listened to on these issues. I will listen — and I will support what neighbors say matters most to them, find compromise when viewpoints among our neighbors differ, so we can protect the character of our neighborhoods.
Lexington is progressive and prosperous, but in changing economies, many people are struggling quietly while working hard to support themselves and their families. I want to be a voice for them — on jobs, affordable housing, mental health, and food insecurity — and help lead Lexington solutions supported by Fifth District neighbors.

Well the moment has arrived that we’ve done all we can do and it’s in the hands of the voters. It’s humbling when someone says they voted you, to be thanked for doing this and seeing your own name on the ballot, it’s been an unbelievable experience. I especially want to thank all of the poll workers who give of their time for the process of democracy. Go Vote and please join me at Lexington’s Oldest 5th District Adjacent Bar, THE Chevy Chase Inn, THE CCI, to watch the returns on election night, the polls close at 6pm and Former 5th District Councilman Farmer is bringing out the chili dawgs for the occasion! Thanks for your support and being with me! See ya there tonight! 🙏🏻 🤞Button

My Response to the Lexington Herald-Leader Endorsement: Thank you for the opportunity to participate in your endorsement process for Lexington’s 5th District Council race. While I respect your decision, I believe your endorsement overlooked an important perspective in this election: the value of experienced, common sense, neighborhood focused leadership grounded in both professional accomplishment and decades of civic involvement in Lexington. Your editorial correctly identified several major issues facing our city — housing affordability, infill and redevelopment, neighborhood preservation, and public engagement. Those same priorities have not been overlooked in my campaign. I have consistently advocated for responsible infill and redevelopment within the Urban Service Boundary, support for missing-middle housing, and continuing to foster Fayette County’s rural economy and agricultural identity. I have also emphasized that affordable housing includes helping residents on fixed or limited incomes remain in the homes they already own. At the same time, I believe local government must remain focused on the practical concerns residents experience every day. Throughout this campaign, neighbors have repeatedly raised concerns about traffic safety, reckless driving, road conditions, flooding caused by clogged storm sewers, and responsiveness from city government. These issues directly affect quality of life across the 5th District. I also believe local government in Lexington benefits from independent, non-partisan candidates like myself. My approach has been straightforward: listen first and make decisions grounded in what neighbors say matter most to them, and ensure residents feel heard and represented in decisions made at City Hall. As a lifelong Lexington resident with more than forty years in the 5th District, I remain committed to common sense leadership, and practical solutions shaped by the voices of our neighbors.Button

Lexington drivers are feeling it every day: rough patches, uneven pavement, steel plates, and temporary repairs that don’t hold up. In the 5th District for over a year and a half without answers or accountability we have one of the worst examples, Fontaine Road. Much of this is tied to important utility upgrades happening beneath our streets. But while projects are underway, contractors should still be held to consistent, and higher standards for temporary road repairs. Too often, temporary patches become long-term hazards that damage vehicles, create safety concerns, and frustrate residents across the city. If utilities and contractors are going to cut into our streets, they should also be responsible for making roads safe and drivable until permanent repairs are completed. Depressed manhole covers are another example of where improvements can be made to road conditions. Solutions: using a riser ring when repaving (good/better), using the city’s manhole repair machine to raise the manhole and a concrete ring is installed around the manhole (best/longterm). We need to require manholes be raised as the consistent standard with our repaving contractors. We also need a phased plan for those depressed manholes in the lane of travel on roads not being repaved as a pragmatic approach. Lexington deserves better coordination, accountability, and clear standards for temporary pavement restoration and address manholes when repaving. Infrastructure upgrades shouldn’t come at the expense of neighbors tires, rims, suspensions and basic road quality. 🔗 Link in bio for website to get involved! 🤝 🔗 Link in bio to donate! $5, $15, $25, $50 💳 🔗 Link in bio to Kentucky Voter Information Center! 🗳️ 🗓️ Save the date, make a plan to vote early or on May 19th and vote Michael McLaughlin 5th District City Council! 🙋🏻♂️🙋🏾♀️I am ready to listen, so anyone who wants to meet the candidate (that’s me, Michael), comment or message me for when you can find me @kenwicktable or @Josieslexky, I can’t wait to meet you and hear what’s on your mind! #onthecampaigntrail #coffeewiththecandidate #ListeningFirst #5thdistrict #LexingButton
